Wild Herd, 12" x 12" acrylic on cradled wood panel, 2024.

One of my favorite things about exploring the high deserts of western USA is catching glimpses of the wild herds that roam the steppes. The thunder of a galloping herd, a distant whinny, and watching the natural conversations between the family members brings a joy to my heart that I believe many others share. The horse might be one of the most beautiful creatures to roam the earth, and our long standing relationship with them, though sometimes fraught, can also be one of mutual love and respect. However, seeing them from afar, wild, and living free in their evolutionary cradle is transcendent.

One of my favorite books to this day is about the evolution of the horse by Wendy Williams, 'The Horse: The Epic History of Our Noble Companion.' It even inspired a trip to Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, an archeological dig site in Nebraska that has a stunning amount of proto-horses, rhinoceros, and other animals that were drawn to a watering hole after a massive volcanic eruption.

A contemporary abstract equine painting with painterly gestures and impressionistic forms.
